Question 1

Do commercial buildings need planning permission for solar?

Accepted Answer

Often not. Many roof-mounted commercial systems fall within permitted development, but listed buildings, conservation areas and some flat-roof projections change that. We confirm the position for your address before a proposal is finalised.

Question 2

Who deals with the grid connection application?

Accepted Answer

REX does. Systems above the smallest threshold need a G98 or G99 application to the distribution network operator. We prepare and submit it, and adjust the design if the network sets an export limit.

Question 3

Can the installation work around a building that stays open?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Most of the work happens on the roof and in agreed plant areas, with access, deliveries and working hours planned so the site keeps operating.

Question 4

Can solar go on a leased building?

Accepted Answer

It can, with the freeholder or landlord's consent. Raise it early: the lease position affects the design, the paperwork and who benefits from the generation.

Question 5

What happens after the system is switched on?

Accepted Answer

Commissioning includes monitoring setup and a handover walkthrough, so your team can see generation and spot problems early. You can also talk to REX about ongoing maintenance for the system.
