When should solar panels and EV charging be designed into a new build?
Ideally during the design or pre-construction stage. Early coordination helps protect roof space, parking layouts, electrical capacity, containment routes and equipment locations.
Can REX work from our planning conditions and energy strategy?
Yes. We can review planning decision notices, planning conditions, energy statements, parking schedules and electrical information, then develop a practical solar PV and EV charging proposal around the stated requirements.
What is Part S of the Building Regulations?
Approved Document S provides guidance on electric vehicle charging infrastructure in new buildings and certain buildings undergoing major renovation in England. The precise requirements depend on the development, parking arrangements and applicable exemptions or cost caps.
Can solar PV help a development meet energy targets?
Solar PV can contribute to energy-performance and carbon-reduction objectives by generating renewable electricity on site. The required capacity should be coordinated with the project energy or SAP consultant.
How many EV chargers does a development require?
It depends on the building type, parking arrangement, applicable Building Regulations, planning conditions and project requirements. We review the development before advising on active and passive provision.
What if electrical capacity is limited?
Dynamic or site-wide load management may allow multiple chargers to operate within the available supply. Network or infrastructure upgrades may also be required.
Can residents pay separately for EV charging?
Suitable back-office systems can record usage and allow residents, tenants or visitors to pay for the electricity they consume.
Can solar panels, batteries and EV chargers work together?
Yes. Coordinating them can improve electrical planning and allow more locally generated solar electricity to be used within the development.
